Warning to domain owners: remember that Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Opera and other browser owner’s ULTIMATELY control your domain
While you all own your domain now, the developers at Microsoft, Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software ASA and other companies developing browsers ultimately control where your users actually land. Behind the domain name is an IP address that resolves from the DNS or other settings that map the domain name to whereever your users go. However, as you mostly control your domain now, the actual resolution and other things that control the direction your users go are in the browser, the DNS servers and many other things I can’t begin to explain since I’m not a Networking Engineer.
For example, type in “microsoft” into an Opera browser which is gaining a bigger hold of the browser market. It automatically resolves to Microsoft.com without you typing the “.com.” Of course this is a Tradmarked name & makes sense to go to their website, but there may be a gray line that starts to develop on some domains & they may even start charging companies to allow that to happen.
So, why do I say this? I don’t want you all to lose your ultimate control over your domain which may be temporary. Understand that this could be as short has 5 or 10 years…so be proactive, keep reading and watching all the latest trends…don’t get lazy and sit on your Adsense riches and be proactive. Be involved with the companies that control this ability like the ones mentioned above.
