KEYWORD TOPICS: Further proof that “sex REALLY sells” at least on the internet…

A recent study conducted by our researchers found that over 46% of the top 200 keywords searched on the internet are adult or sexually oriented. Close to 50% of the actual searches in the top 200 keywords for the past 90 days were dealing with an adult or sexually oriented topic. The top term on the list was “porn” with the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th of the top search terms all relating to a topic about sex. In total, there were 93 keywords or phrases that dealt with this mature topic.

What was the 2nd highest group of searches for people searching on the Internet? There is a very simple reason why Google has become a $1.5+ billion net raker of profits every 3 months: people just don’t use the url bar much. They type in what they’re looking for like Yahoo.com instead of typing it into the url bar. So, the 2nd highest group of searches is that of the top websites on the Internet. For example, the 5th highest searched word or phrase is what they’re searchin in most of the time in the first place: google. Oh yah, I’m already in Google… Actually, they probably search from Yahoo who according to Alexa.com is ahead of Google in terms of worldwide internet traffic. Other websites people look for are myspace which is the 2nd highest searched keyword or phrase. Yahoo…maybe on Google? Funny… Ebay, more Myspace (why do people like this site — it’s beyond me), Mapquest, YouTube and a handful of others. These site searches only represented 15% of the keywords and a little short of 20% of the keyword traffic in the top 200 keywords.

So, what are the other subjects that people usually search? The 3rd highest group is a group I like to call “celebrities”, but I would say it’s a mix of celebrities and hot or attractive ladies. Thus, it’s hard to distinguish this category aside from the top searched category of adult material. 13% of the keywords belonged to this category including the two top phrases recently “paris hilton” and “akon.” I hope Paris Hilton has an online guru on her team…if not, she better get one. Gaming is next, then reference, corporate brands, consumer products follows after that, pets, music, comics, entertainment (very vague category including humor, free e-cards & wwe — didn’t know how to categorize these), with discount, kids topics and religious rounding off the top 14 topics of keywords searched on the internet.
